Now entering the last baseball-less month

February 1st….we’re getting their baseball fans. Slowly but surely, we’re getting there.

Spring Training camps open in a few weeks and pretty soon the practice games will begin. In a little more than two months, the games will count for real.

As excited as I am about this, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. This was supposed to be the off-season the Jays made a big splash. Instead the Jays are yet to upgrade any position outside of the bullpen. Serious questions still abound in the starting rotation and there’s little reason to believe the Jays are going to make a huge jump and go from 81 wins to 95.

Missing out on Yu Darvish hurt. Now the Jays aren’t even going to make a play for Cuba’s Yoenis Cespedes. You have to wonder, if the Jays have the money to spend, what are they waiting for?

Still, as a fan we have to believe. A full year of Brett Lawrie. Another year of seasoning for Ricky Romero and Brandon Morrow. A totally revamped bullpen. And of course who could forget Jose Bautista. Maybe Kelly Johnson will recapture his 30 home run potential as well.

Is it going to be enough?

As a fan, I have no choice but to say yes.

I think this pretty much sums up what all of us are feeling…

Yet, the talent is there. I think we played a couple of games below potential last season and if Rasmus/Johnson can be the players they really are and if Lind can even be an average MLB regular again, 90 wins is not impossible. There are a lot of ‘ifs’ but that’s all we have right now: hope.
