New uniforms and expanded playoffs…..it’s a great time to be a Blue Jays fan
It’s been an awesome week for the Blue Jay fans, and they didn’t even make a trade or win a ball game.
Instead it’s the unveiling of new retro looking jerseys and word that baseball will add an extra Wild Card in each league next year that has me giddy with excitement.
First, the new uniforms. Basically they are the early 90’s version with an updated logo. Gone is the black and back is the blue. Even the word ‘Blue’ is back, replacing the old simple ‘JAYS’ that adorned the front of the jersey. As a fan from back in those days, I love it. I don’t want to speak for everyone, but based on the comments I’ve heard from fellow Jay fans over the years, I think they’re going to love it.
Here they are in all their glory:
To my friends and family, I’m size large and Christmas is just over a month away. Just saying.
Even bigger than that is the fact that comish Bud Selig confirmed that baseball would add a second Wild Card to each league for next season. The details are still being worked out, but it’s looking like the 5th seed team will face the 4th seed team in a one game playoff.
Had this been around this year the Jays would have still finished nine games out of a playoff spot…..but I think we can all agree that short of implementing a salary cap, this is the only hope medium market teams like Toronto have at making the playoffs in this decade.
In 2013 the Astros will move to the AL and constant interleague play will be introduced. I’m not sure I love that idea but it will make things more even. Five teams per division.
And on an unrelated note, I had a chance to sit at the same table as Blue Jays’ radio announcer Jerry Howarth last night as he was hosting an awards night in Napanee. This doesn’t really have anything to do with the rest of the post, but I have to say it was one of the coolest dinners I have ever had. He’s about as down to earth as you’d expect him to be if you’ve ever heard him on the radio.
